Re:Invent 2020, AWS presents the new Mac Instances for EC2

On the occasion of Re.invent, the most anticipated event in the cloud world, which this year is taking place entirely on an online platform, AWS announced the arrival of the new Mac EC2 instances.

Amacon EC2 Mac instances will enable customers to run on-demand macOS workloads in the cloud for the first time, extending flexibility, scalability, and cost benefits for AWS and all Apple developers.
With EC2 Mac instances, developers will be able to create applications for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and easily access macOS environments by scaling the capacity needed and taking advantage of the benefits of AWS known as pay as you go.
The instances, offered by the AWS Nitro System, will be built on Mini Mac computers with Intel Core i7 processors and will offer customers a choice of Mojave (10.14) and Catalina (10.15) operating systems with future support for Catalina (10.15).

Features:

  • Built on Mac hardware. EC2 Mac instances are built on Apple mini computers with 8th Generation 3.2GHz (4.6GHz turbo) Intel Core i7 processor with 6 physical/12 logical cores and 32GB of memory.
  • Enabled by the AWS Nitro system.
AWS Nitro is a rich collection of building blocks that offloads many of the software-defined functions to dedicated hardware and software to deliver high performance, high availability, and security.
Nitro enables EC2 instances to offer Mac mini computers as fully integrated and managed EC2 instances to provide 10 Gbps of VPC network bandwidth and 8 Gbps of EBS storage bandwidth.

What will be the benefits of EC2 Mac instances?

  • Extend the toolkits. EC2 Mac instances provide developers with seamless access to AWS services so they can collaborate more easily and efficiently with team members and develop, build, test, analyze, and enhance their apps.
  • Reduce costs. Developers will be able to access macOS environments in minutes, so they can adjust provisioning capacity and pay only for what you use.
  • Quickly deliver macOS environments. EC2 Mac instances will now give developers the ability to focus only on building useful and creative apps, avoiding wasting resources building and maintaining macOS environments.
